Philips launches new free-to-air terrestrial set-top boxes in Europe

Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Sep 08, 2006 - Philips is introducing a new generation of free-to-air, digital terrestrial set-top boxes for retail outlets in Germany, France and the UK. The DTR 210 receiver offers viewers a compelling combination of high-quality reception and innovative functionality at a competitive price.

The set-top boxes employ improved technology from the well-proven DTR 200 digital terrestrial set-top box already available in Europe. The DTR 210 employs the revolutionary Nexperia PNX8316 chipset from Philips Semiconductors, a robust chipset that provides cost-effective intelligent control of DVB reception. The receiver combines attractive styling with advanced functionality that appeals to users with innovative taste and an eye for ultra-modern design. In addition, the seven-day Electronic Programme Guide allows convenient and comprehensive viewer selection.

Digital terrestrial reception is subject to impulsive interference, commonly caused by external electrical sources such as trains, tramcars, car ignition and household appliances and switches. Such interference can cause picture distortion and is suppressed in the DTR 210 by Philips award-winning ‘Pulse Killer Chip’, which also enables fast channel scan.

Key features in the DTR 210 include very fast automatic installation (typically within two minutes), intuitive set-up menus, Dolby Digital sound, double SCART connection for VCRs and access to digital radio through the TV set. Both models allow migration from analog to digital reception of more channels in DVD sound and picture quality.

The launch of this new set-top box underscores Philips’ commitment to the digital terrestrial retail market in Europe. The products are available in retail outlets in the UK since August and will be launched in other countries (France, Spain, Germany, the Nordics) from September onwards.
